American Packaging Corporation (APC) is a renowned leader in the North American packaging industry. APC specializes inflexographic and rotogravure printing, multi-ply extrusion, and adhesive lamination of film, paper, and foil, as well as pouch and bag fabrication.

While starting up two new locations just prior to the coronavirus pandemic, the corporate health and safety team utilized the opportunity to standardize their mature safety management programs across their portfolio and began to seek a software platform that would aid them in their journey.

A solution was needed that enabled any employee to identify hazards, report near misses or observations, and complete other site related safety tasks without any additional data entry required for reports to be generated.

Asked how SafetyAmp was chosen, Jim Withers, the Corporate EHS Director at APC told us a little about their selection process.

"It was a difficult decision because after narrowing our choices down to two platforms, SafetyAmp and the other vendor were very close in terms of functionality and customer support options. At the end of the day, we felt better with our interactions with the SafetyAmp team and their energy and expertise."

APC's first moves on the SafetyAmp platform was to utilize the "no code" app builder to create a chemical evaluation and approval solution.

Jim explained how APC was able to eliminate a costly point solution and build an approval process inside of the SafetyAmp platform that met all of their needs and streamlined the approval process across their locations. Document control was included in this approach to deliver easily-accessible SDS sheets to staff.

Management Of Change was another foundation of the EH&S program at APC. Again, the app builder was used to create a robust MOC process that incorporated the specific data elements and processes APC needed for it to be successful.

In pursuit of ISO45001 certification, efforts were directed to digitizing safety observations, audits, inspections, and risk assessments inside of the platform to create a single source of truth for all of the companies critical safety data.

"As we are undergoing the process of achieving ISO45001 certification, what we're accomplishing in the SafetyAmp platform as an entire company is going to make a very strong case for us. [...] At the end of the day, it became clear that SafetyAmp was the best option for American Packaging."
